Dragon

A dragon is a creature evolved to depend on khaos for its biological development; according to scholars the most unifying trait of dragons their ability to see khaosic rays with a transparent third eyelid. Most dragons share anatomical characteristics with reptiles and and birds and are typically covered with scales and/or feathers. Many species, but not all, are able to fly. Due to their association with khaos and their numerous valuable uses, owning or riding a dragon is a mark of high status in the Republic of Enemies.

Dragons eggs must be exposed to khaosic light to hatch, and also seem to derive vigor from basking in this light regularly. The inability to do so results in wasting health and eventual death. They are noted to evolve far more rapidly than any other species, hypothesized to be the result of this extensive exposure to magic.

Susceptibility to parasites and high infant mortality has made wild dragons rare; their population has flourished greatly under the care of humans, who delight in breeding and training them for various purposes. Doing so is prestigious, but dangerous and difficult: dragons are both highly intelligent and highly temperamental, and do not suffer individuals they dislike.
